Growing up, I almost always had my nose buried within the pages of an Agatha Christie novel. There’s a reason she is the Queen of Crime and holds the title of the best-selling author of all time; it’s because her books are so interesting. Here are all the Agatha Christie movies we deserve.
In this age, most people prefer movie adaptations. Whilst TV series such as Poirot and Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple did justice to a lot of her work, nothing beats an independent movie.
Agatha Christie Movies The World Needs
I’m tired of seeing the same old Agatha Christie books get turned to movies (I’m looking at you Murder On The Orient Express). This is why I’m compiling this list of books that need to become Agatha Christie movies. I’ll be linking to the book so you can read these compelling mysteries. Destination Unknown:
When a number of leading scientists disappear without a trace, concern grows within the international intelligence community. And the one woman who appears to hold the key to the mystery is dying from injuries sustained in a plane crash.
Ask any hardcore fan to list Agatha Christie books, and there is a high chance they won’t mention this novel. Hilary Craven, a deserted wife and bereaved mother who becomes an undercover agent for the Secret Service will be a hit with ladies across the globe. This is one of the most underrated Agatha Christie books. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
The Moving Finger:
The Burtons, brother and sister, arrive in the small town (or village) of Lymstock in Devon and soon receive an anonymous letter accusing them of being lovers, not siblings. They are not the only ones in the village to receive such letters. A prominent resident is found dead with one such letter found next to her. Gossip Girl with murder would be how any movie of this Agatha Christie book should be made. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
Nemesis:
Miss Marple is astounded as she reads the letter from the recently deceased tycoon Mr. Jason Rafiel bequeathing her a £20,000 legacy and asking her to investigate his own murder. He leaves few clues but has failed to name a suspect or suspects. There have been two television adaptations but no movie based on this novel. That’s such a shame. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
Hickory Dickory Dock:
An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot’s interest. But the list of stolen items – including a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring – made no sense. And why was everyone so afraid?
Teen movies are all the rage so I don’t know why film producers are sleeping on this tale revolving around college students in a hostel. There’s been one television adaptation in the Poirot series, but I truly believe it deserves to be an Agatha Christie movie. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
The Secret Adversary:
A modern take on this spy mystery thriller would be incredible. A young couple in love, mystery and danger. Hollywood, wake up, please. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
A Murder Is Announced:
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn are agog with curiosity when the newspaper advertises “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.” A murder takes place and unravelling the mystery is the sole focus of Miss Marple.
Filmmakers clearly see the potential of this book because it has been adapted for television seven times, in seven different countries. However, it hasn’t been made into a movie. A modern take on this Agatha Christie tale will be incredible. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
The Secret of Chimneys:
This is a captivating classic, which will leave you guessing until the end. With the raging success of Gosford Park, I’ve always wondered why this book was never converted to a movie. It has a better plot with a stunning reveal at the end. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
Ordeal by Innocence:
According to the courts, Jacko Argyle bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker. The sentence was life imprisonment. But when Dr. Arthur Calgary arrives with the proof that confirms Jacko’s innocence, it is too late—Jacko died behind bars following a bout of pneumonia. Worse still, the doctor’s revelations reopen old wounds in the family, increasing the likelihood that the real murderer will strike again.
This novel isn’t as famous but I believe it is perfect for the times we are in. With the rise of psychological thrillers, this might be the perfect moment for this book to shine. A film adaptation was released in 1985 and it’s been adapted for television thrice. I recommend watching the three-part series released in 2018. If you haven’t, you should read the book.
