Dead to Me is a television series produced by Netflix. It has a bewitching trailer and Christina Applegate is a beloved actress of mine, so I was intrigued from the moment I saw her in the trailer.
PLOT OUTLINE
Jen’s husband recently died in a hit-and-run, and the sardonic widow is determined to solve the crime. Optimistic free spirit Judy has recently suffered a tragic loss of her own. The ladies meet at a support group and, despite their polar-opposite personalities, become unlikely friends. As the women bond over bottles of wine and a shared affinity for “The Facts of Life,” Judy tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.
This black comedy series focuses on a group of people who aren’t typically portrayed in mainstream movies or television shows.
Below are the reasons you need to binge-watch Dead To Me ASAP. This TV series is captivating. It also dances a fine line, because it is a mystery and comedy at the same time. True entertainment.
1. It Focuses On Pain
Pain is a universally recognized emotion, but it does not shine center stage in cinematic works. Works of Art focus on other genres that can be similar to pain, such as struggle and fear.
Dead to Me is a stark look into the pain people suffer, and the importance of kindness. It does this in a way, that you learn the lesson whilst being entertained. A true work of art.
2. It Puts Widows At The Forefront
The series stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini as grieving women who bond during therapy. Dead To Me also sheds light on grief, its stages and how it warps of the reality of all those affected. It further proves that grief is an emotion that cannot be partitioned. It wrecks and the pain is similar.
It focuses on the struggle to return to normal, and get on with their lives and how it can place a person in tandem with people who they never would have thought would be in their circle.
3. The Cast
The acting in Dead To Me is topnotch. As mentioned above, I love Christina Applegate and she did not disappoint in this series. Her portrayal of Jen, a real estate agent and mom mourning the death of her husband Ted, who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run drive was so good, it earned her a 2019 Emmy Awards nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
However, Linda Cardellini was simply incredible as Judy. She’s truly the icing on the cake and while viewing this series you would be annoyed that she did not receive an Emmy nod. The show also stars James Marsden, Ed Asner, Sam McCarthy and Brandon Scott.
With a talented slew of A-grade actors, this bewitching series satisfactorily produces twists and turns that will leave you on your toes.
4. The Ending
It would not shock you to discover that this dark comedy (which explores the weirdly funny sides of grief, loss and forgiveness) was not intended to end the way it did.
In fact, Feldman told The Hollywood Reporter that she had planned an entirely different ending but her co-executive producer Abe Sylvia partway through the writing process got this idea for the current ending, and all the writers agreed it was brilliant. She hopes to keep the show going for as long as possible. “It would be the pleasure and honor of my life to do this show for as many seasons as makes sense. I would do this show forever if I could.”
Netflix’s Dead To Me is one of the greatest TV series of 2019. It’s a must watch, and once you start, you wouldn’t want to stop. My only grudge is that the theme song isn’t Dead To Me by Kali Uchis. Watch the series now on Netflix.
