Since the beginning of time, women have had a passion for beautiful hair. Hair has enhanced beauty for centuries. This is a major reason why women are obsessed with hair extensions. Hair even plays the central feature of a beloved character in children’s stories; Rapunzel.
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
– 1 Peter 3:3
Hair is a beautiful accessory on all skin tones. Regardless of race or gender, it is gorgeous. It’s easily changed, can be styled in countless ways, possesses beauty with different colours and has the power to transform a person’s outlook.
It’s little wonder then, that women are obsessed with hair. The hair industry is estimated to be worth a staggering $211 billion in 2025. It is currently worth $88 billion.
This can easily be seen in the net worth of players in the hair industry. It has also led to the growth of hair merchants across the world. Even in Nigeria, these hair merchants live a luxurious lifestyle and are quite famous.
It is then appalling that as popular as hair extensions are, the consumers never stop to consider it’s origins. This is weird as human hair is the most expensive brand of hair extensions, and as the name assures, is hair purchased from other women. Yet, this lack of interest or sympathy has turned global hair business to a cesspool of vice, illegal trade and suffering.
There have been numerous reports of matriarchs of starving families in undeveloped countries, selling their hair for a pittance to fend for their families. Refinery29 did exhaustive research and have discovered the ins & outs of the hair extensions industry.
This is an alarming issue in today’s world. It calls for urgent attention and action. In this day, where female rights are being pursued, sustained and entrenched, this act of unfair trade in such a popular industry must be eradicated.
