Today is World Book Day, and also the day that one of the world’s greatest authors, William Shakespeare died. Shakespeare’s works have been internationally lauded as superior works, and he is regarded as a great writer across genres.
Although his tragedies are more popular, I have always loved the comedies. William Shakespeare was indeed a great comic writer, with the right mix of sarcasm, dry humour and wit to keep you laughing. Below are my five favourite Shakespearean comedies;
1. The Comedy of Errors:
It is his shortest comedy but is filled with laughs throughout. Mistaken identity and the furore it causes, lead to situations that will have you laughing out loud. Get it on Amazon.
2. As You Like It:
This book follows Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin Celia. She finally finds safety and love in the Forest of Arden. Get it on Amazon.
3. The Two Gentlemen of Verona:
This book fixates on themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the silly decisions that lovers make. It is considered by many to be Shakespeare’s first play. Get it on Amazon.
4. A Midsummer Night’s Dream:
This book follows the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. It is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed around the world. Get it on Amazon.
5. The Winter’s Tale:
Although the last book on this list, this work holds a special place in my heart. It is a perfect blend of romance and comedy. It also has a depth of emotion as there is intense psychological drama. A true rom-com. Get it on Amazon.
