WorkParty: How to Create & Cultivate the Career of Your Dreams by Jaclyn Johnson

This book is for a new generation of women who are redefining the meaning of work on their own terms. The boss babes who want it all and believe they can have it.

Review: Jaclyn’s authentic voice is consistent throughout and she delivers two important gifts to readers. First, an honest raw account of failure and disappointment that doesn’t turn into an overnight fairytale. The last portion of the book is a practical guide to business lingo which is not only useful but a reality check for anyone who thinks launching a business is all “party” and minimal work.

The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish

Trust me when I say this, you won’t be bored while reading this book. You’d find it hard to put it down. By turns hilarious, filthy, and brutally honest, this bestseller details Tiffany’s rise in life. It will inspire anyone who reads it.

Review: Well folks, if loving Tiffany Haddish is wrong, I don’t want to be right. This book is awesome sauce. It is an unflinching memoir that I hope will be as legendary as she probably will. This woman is a magical creature. I admire the hell out of her. I read it in 24 hours and couldn’t put it down. You will laugh like a crazy person, cry like another one, but most of all you will get a glimpse into the mind of a comic genius. I hope nothing but good things for this incredible woman. She deserves all the best things in life. I am a fan, and after reading this, if you have a beating heart in your chest, you will be one too. One of the best memoirs I’ve ever read! Keep being you girl!

Rich with humour, insight, compassion—and absolute honesty—this book is a balm for everything life will throw your way. It’s a fascinating blend of memoir and self-help. A reminder that every last one of us can do better than give up.

Review: A marvelous book, Tiny Beautiful Things reminded me of the prevalence of human suffering and the part we can play in easing one another’s burdens. Based on an advice column, Dear Sugar, it’s filled with letters to Sugar asking for advice on love, heartache, disappointment, and suffering. From cancer to adultery and death to Christmas, Sugar responds with tough, shrewd compassion. She doesn’t candy coat her responses or pull any punches. Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World by Ann Shen

What’s better than reading a story of one awesome woman? Reading about a hundred remarkable ladies. The 100 revolutionary women highlighted in this book were bad in the best sense of the word: they challenged the status quo and changed the rules for all who followed. From pirates to artists, warriors, daredevils, women in science, activists, and spies, the accomplishments of these incredible women who dared to push boundaries vary as much as the eras and places in which they effected change.

Review: Full of beautiful artwork featuring 100 rule-breaking, precedent-setting women, this delightful volume is not only the perfect coffee table accent (all the pretty pictures!) but it’s a brilliant and inspiring read to boot. The depictions are very stunning, and the write-ups that accompany each illustration are jammed with useful tidbits of information.

Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives by Gretchen Rubin

I’ll be the first to tell you. This book will seem boring at times. You will pick it up, and start it numerous times but a little voice in your head will keep telling you to carry on. That voice is right.

Review: So much to say about this book – but the best thing I can say is to read it! It gives many real-life ideas to put into practice.

Whilst the above-mentioned girl boss books are non-fiction, I want to add some works of fiction that have strong female leads that inspire me. These female characters are true boss babes, and embody the characteristics of independent young women.

From Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark to Liz Bennett and Hermione Granger, boss babes have a place in fiction. Females in literature have mostly served aesthetic or romantic purposes. That’s why I love when I read a book and see strong and smart females. Read these fictional girl boss books with ladies that will inspire you.

Girls With Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young

Philomena is the definition of a boss babe. In fact, all the ladies at The Girls of Innovations Academy are girl bosses. This book is a powerful read that every lady will enjoy.

Review: Girls with Sharp Sticks is about Mena, a girl that goes to a school where she is taught how to be the ‘perfect woman’. The girls are told how to dress, how to act, and how to behave in order to please the men in their lives. They are conditioned to behave and be ‘proper’ and to obey. But when strange things start happening Mena starts noticing how unusual the school is and how sheltered the girls actually are. With the help of a new friend from outside the school walls, Mena opens her eyes and sees what’s really going on at Innovations Academy and she isn’t going to let it continue. When all the girls band together, the men of Innovations learn what the tag line says: Some of the prettiest flowers have the sharpest thorns.

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

This book was written in 1797, and reached classic status off the actions of one woman. There have been many fictional female leads but Elizabeth Bennett is definitely one of the greatest of all time. The traits she portrays are still useful to ladies today.

Review: I feel like there is no one who understands me like Lizzie Bennett. She is strong, smart, and knows what she wants. More importantly, her existence made me, as a young girl, feel like maybe I could grow up to be the same. I also love the fact that despite Lizzie living in a world that just wasn’t fair to women (they had to marry, they couldn’t inherit, and were often regarded as silly) she never let that stop her from speaking her mind.
