When I started reading Girls With Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young, I put it down twice. It was a captivating book that I could not put down till I finished. The last book that gripped me this much was Crazy Rich Asians. It is one of the best books released last year.
PLOT OUTLINE
The Girls of Innovations Academy are beautiful and well-behaved—it says so on their report cards. Under the watchful gaze of their Guardians, the all-girl boarding school offers an array of studies and activities. They are obedient young ladies, free from arrogance or defiance. Until Mena starts to realize that their carefully controlled existence may not be quite as it appears.
However, this book is a compelling look into sexism and female subjugation in this world. A thrilling look into how men can micro-manage and destroy women trying to mould them into their idea of perfect.
They thought us soulless. But really, the way they treated us shows that they’re the soulless ones. They’re the monsters, the creatures.

The girls realise that they do not have willpower, and manage to escape. This book is the first in a series by New York Times bestselling author, Suzanne Young. The next book, Girls with Razor Hearts will be published this year and I can’t wait to read it.
The books talk about finding your own unique voice and rejecting societal principles. This is why it has resonated deeply with everyone that has read it. If you check, all of its reviews commend reading it. Cosmopolitan stated that they loved it, and it has enough plot twists to give a reader whiplash.
I shake my head, the vision of him hurting us playing in my mind. Him smiling as he does it. Handing us a lollipop when it was over. And he would have kept doing it. Girl after girl. Because the men here considered us soulless, and by devaluing our existence, it allowed them to act out their sickest fantasies.
Mena
It talks about the roundabout nature of the abuse that many women face. After Rebecca is abused by her guardian, Mena contemplates on this. She realises that she does not want to be beautiful anymore because Professor Penchant told them men can’t control themselves around beautiful women.
So instead of addressing their behaviour, he put the responsibility on them. She understands that this is also why Rebecca did not want to be beautiful any longer. She thought that maybe if she wasn’t pretty, they wouldn’t bother her anymore.
The girls in the academy are awoken at the end of the book, and they escape. However, the world is unfamiliar to them, and they have to navigate the dangerous terrain. Also, the acknowledgement in Girls With Sharp Sticks spoke to me. When I read these words, it truly touched me.
