Total Dhamaal is a fun action-adventure comedy that was released at the beginning of this year. The first thing that strikes you is the number of stars present in this movie. It’s a super ensemble cast. Even the cameos are made by huge stars. This leads to high expectations in my mind which were halfway met.
As the movie progresses, you can’t help feeling that the cast could have been brought together for an original plot as opposed to this adaptation of It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. There are also elements of Million Dollar Mystery in this movie. This sentiment has been stated by other reviewers with The National stating, “Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha are perfectly talented actors, wasted on the failure that is ‘Total Dhamaal’.”
The plot of Total Dhamaal has been told severally, but never like it is expressed in this movie. The movie rests on comedy, fine acting, and a general vibe of senselessness. As the film progresses, you realise that you’re going to have a good time and not a meaningful experience.
The movie begins with a catchy dance number by the entire cast proclaiming that money is the ultimate goal in life. Bollywood has many heist movies with a lovable thief and Total Dhamaal takes the same path. Ajay Devgn is charming, suave and true to the stereotype of a gorgeous thief who you like despite being a criminal.
I haven’t seen Riteish Deshmukh in a while, and he does not disappoint in this movie. Basically, no matter how huge your problems are, you will definitely laugh during the course of this movie.
Also, the movie shows the origin of the stolen loot. Despite being a comedy, the movie subtly touches on major issues. Corruption of aid workers, deceptive adverts, criminal takeovers and the incompetence of the police.
Total Dhamaal has a happy ending for everyone, and delivers on what the producers promised. It is a star-studded, laugh-inducing movie about retrieving stolen loot that will make the viewers feel good. Fox Star Studios promised that it will serve as the family entertainer of the year and I believe it does.
